Some of my most rewarding projects have come from unused items found around the house. Given a little ingenuity and a few supplies, I like to transform these sad saps into something useful and beautiful. I love doing lighting projects in particular. This little guy got a major overall with just a few coats of spray paint and a sleek lampshade.

The base was in good condition when I found it in the basement. I gave it a good scrub to remove all the cobwebs and prep it for painting. Its solid brass and is very sturdy. I loved its curvy base. When rehabbing pieces, be sure to chose an item that is sturdy and worth your time and monetary investment. No sense making over a piece that will fall apart in a week!

I painted the base with a two coats of my favorite primer–Rustoleum Ultra Cover in white. Be sure to cover the socket and plug with painter’s tape and/or a plastic bag to prevent spraying those areas. As soon as the primer has dried, get to spray painting! I had chosen the lamp’s new home, so I had originally thought a nice gray color would turn out well. Once I got the color on, I knew it wouldn’t work out. The gray was too blue and not at all the strong color I was hoping for. Back to the drawing board!

Gray gone ghoulish

After the gray had gone out the window, I bit the bullet and attacked it with some silver spray paint. I’ve tried several brands over the years and have found the best kind is Rustoleum Metallic without the built-in primer. The cap color made me a bit anxious–its VERY shiny–but its goes on evenly and gives a great finished product. I found a lamp shade on sale for $6 at Homegoods and threw it on as soon as the paint had dried. Ta-da!

Every crafter has mishaps. Just keep at it until you’re content with the finished project–or there’s extra room in the trashcan. Can’t win ’em all. Happy crafting! -Olivia

I totally agree! Brass is outdated and too old-fashioned looking to fit in with most rooms furnished in any sort of modern aesthetic I should raid my grandmother’s living room and update all the boring brass stuff she has!
