I love owls. I have an owl lamp, two owl vases, and even owl earrings. While perusing my favorite thrift shop, I found an adorable owl figurine for $1.97. In its original painted state, it looked a little dated. The various shades of brown made the little guy look a bit angry. I knew with a touch of spray paint it could take on a new, modern life.

Supplies I used: owl figurine, damp rag to remove dust from crevices, primer, mask, and glossy spray paint.

This figurine was in good shape when I bought it–no chips or cracks. It just needed an update to make it not quite so formidable. I gave it a quick clean with a damp rag to remove the dust that had settled into all the nooks and crannies. I ended up doing several coats of primer as the brown paint didn’t want to be covered up very easily.

Be sure to let the primer dry fully between coats! I do most of my spray painting in the garage, and I didn’t have the best lighting in there that day. Don’t forget to wear a mask when using any type of aerosol paint. A lungful of spray paint can slow a crafter down quite a bit. After the owl had been fully covered with primer, I sprayed it with two coats of glossy white spray paint.

Shiny, glossy goodness!

I love quick projects like this one.  Not much energy is required to add new interest to a bookshelf or table. This little guy got a new home on the foyer table. I try to cluster accessories in small groups so that the area doesn’t become cluttered but still looks interesting.

I definitely like prefer the crisp, white owl over the darkness of its previous state. See what you can find in the backs of cupboards or on the shelves of your favorite thrift store. Just a few minutes of work can give you a great new piece!

Happy crafting! -Olivia
